THE CASE
7.5-month-old takes two naps per day. Bedtime goes okay, but he wakes up 45 minutes later screaming. He also wakes every hour between 4-6am and needs help settling.
Morning Wake Up
7:15-7:30 a.m.
THE CURRENT SLEEP SCHEDULE
Wake Windows (hours)
2.5 / 2.5 / 3-3.5
Bedtime
Around 7 p.m.
THE PROBLEM
This baby is only getting 8-8.5h of total awake time, which is too low for his age. He is also in bed for more than 12 hours per night. He is treating bedtime like a nap, because his body feels the day isn't done yet.
THE FIX
Extend wake windows significantly. For a two nap schedule, something like 2.75/3/2.25-3.5h could work well.
Mom decided a set schedule was preferred - so this means naps at 9:30 and 2 p.m., bedtime at 7 p.m. In both cases, we need to have him awake by 7 a.m. if we want bedtime to be in the 7 p.m. hour.
“I would charge way more for this, it is fantastic. It gives parents all the sleep info they need for YEARS.”
- Kristen, mom of a 4-year-old & 7-month-old
“This entire guide is so informative! I think being able to reference and troubleshoot each stage is the most valuable part.”
-Johanna, mom of an 18-month-old
“I hear a lot about wake windows which can be confusing and hard to keep track of, learning about sleep pressure and how it goes along with the wake windows was a game-changer!”
- Melissa, mom of a 6-week-old
“Is this sleep training?”
Nope!
Sleep training is a strategy used to teach your child to sleep independently. This guide is designed for all families, regardless of their approach to sleep. Whether you bed-share, assist to sleep and transfer to the crib, or are wanting to focus on independent sleep-your child can sleep so much better if their sleep schedule is optimized.
If you are planning on sleep training, I strongly believe that optimizing your child’s sleep schedule should come first. If we don’t do this, sleep training is unlikely to go well. Understanding how your child’s sleep needs will change as they age is also key to making sleep changes last long term. Sleep regressions are often just a signal that your child needs less sleep and their schedule needs to be adjusted.
